Checkpoint 2 Instructions: There are two major parts of this checkpoint. You are expected to complete all steps of the checkpoint. Use the Ten Step Writing Process learned in your Real Life Applications classes to gather information from the resources provided on this page. Once you have gathered your information, you will complete your checkpoint in the October Checkpoint Answer Document provided below and kmail to your teacher. If you have any questions about what is expected of you, contact your homeroom teacher as soon as possible!

You are in Maggie's class and have begun to brainstorm ways to assist the homeless population in your city. You will need to identify a problem encountered by the homeless and formulate a plan to solve the problem. Use evidence from the passages and video to support your ideas. Answer both parts.

Part 2
1. As discussed in the article "About Homelessness", many people become homeless as a result of poverty. Below you will find a table of weekly and monthly personal expenses. For this part of the task you will need to create a monthly budget for your family based on a monthly salary. You will need to decide which expenses are the most important and which ones your family will need to live without.

- You make minimum wage ($8.00 per hour).
- You work full time (40 hours per week).
- Your monthly salary is how much you make per month (4 weeks per month).
2. You will need to write a one paragraph justification, or explanation, of your budget. Think about the questions below to guide your writing.
- What made you choose to pay the expenses you selected?
- Which expenses did you have to cut out, and why?
- Are there any consequences associated with not paying some of the expenses you cut out?
While you will not be graded based on spelling, grammar, and conventions, your paragraph should be written in a manner that is appropriate in fourth grade. Do your best in organizing and explaining your ideas using appropriate paragraph formatting and sentence structure.
