Fourth Grade April Checkpoint
Due Friday, April 24, 2015
Directions: There are two major parts of this checkpoint. You are expected to complete both parts. You will submit your answers in the Google form found HERE. If you have any questions about what is expected of you, contact your homeroom teacher as soon as possible.
Part 1 - ELA
Nonfiction articles are more interesting when you notice the pictures, captions, and other text features. In this activity, you will answer questions about these parts of the article “The Burning Town” in the April/May 2013 issue of Storyworks.
Step 1: Open the article titled "The Burning Town". The article can be found to the right.
Step 2: Preview the questions below. Step 3: Answer the questions, using complete sentences, in the Google form. |
|
- Read the headline and the words following it on page 4. What do you predict the article will mainly be about?
- Look at the pictures and read the captions in the article. What topics do they suggest the story will discuss?
- Based on the pictures, do you think this is mostly a current-events story? Why or why not?
- Look at the map on page 7. Why do you think authors often include maps with nonfiction articles?
- Study the graphs of page 8. What do they tell you about coal use in the United States. Why is that information important to this article?
- Compare the photo on pages 4 and 5 with the pictures on pages 7 and 9. Do they look like the same place? What do they each show you about the town?
BONUS: Is there any photograph, map, or other visual you would have liked to have seen with this article? Why do you think it would have been helpful?
Part 2 - Math
This part of the checkpoint requires you to use your knowledge of parallel and perpendicular lines and right angles to classify two-dimensional shapes. Read each question carefully, as there may be more than one correct answer.
